Also known as “sweatshirts,” the term “hoodie” primarily arose from white suburban culture in the 1990s. Since then, college students have played a major role in contributing to their success as nearly every college dresser, closet, or wardrobe will 99.9999% of the time have a hoodie in it.
Many college people love to publicly display their school or university hoodies by wearing them to malls, restaurants, or other public places. It’s mostly because hoodies are comfortable to wear but it’s also for show like “look at me, I’m in college so that makes me cool” kind of thing. In addition, many college alumni still occasionally wear their hoodies for bragging rights with their fellow coworkers or friends and have little arguments like “My college was ranked way higher than your college” etc.
Anyways, hoodies have remained extremely popular in the college community for various other reasons as well. One of the reasons is that they’re very casual but most importantly they match with almost anything, including another popular college clothing article: jeans.
This is very important to college people because it greatly reduces the amount of time they spend sifting through their closet in the morning trying to find a matching pair of clothes… and anything that could possibly save time for them, especially in the morning, is a “good thing” as Martha Stewart would say. Because of this, now all they have to do is simply throw on a pair of jeans and grab their hoodie and off to class they go.
So the next time you see a college student wearing a hoodie, talk about how cool it looks, or say something like “Hey, that hoodie of yours pretty much rocks.” Stay away from anything that deals with lack of taste or style, unless–of course, you don’t mind having an angry college student yapping back at you.
